Worked transcription example

From interview audio to editable, reusable text.

This example follows a 12-minute, two-person product interview recorded as M4A. It shows what automatic transcription produces, what a reviewer should correct, and which export fits the next task.

This is a worked product example, not a claim that every recording has the same accuracy.

The review process

Four decisions turn raw recognition into a useful transcript.

Speech recognition removes most manual typing, but usefulness comes from a short, targeted review.

  1. 1

    Keep the original recording

The M4A source was uploaded directly. Converting it to MP3 first would not improve the speech signal.

  2. 2

    Correct names and product terms

The reviewer checked proper nouns and one acronym against the project notes instead of trusting phonetic guesses.

  3. 3

    Add readable paragraph breaks

Short thoughts were grouped by topic, while question-and-answer changes remained visually separate.

  4. 4

    Verify quotes against timestamps

Important quotations were replayed from the timed segment before being copied into a research summary.

Before and after

A small correction with a large difference.

The raw result was already searchable. Review made it safe to quote and easier for another person to scan.

Raw recognitionwe tested voice sum with the support calls and the main issue was finding the exact customer quote laterReviewed transcript
“We tested Voysum with the support calls. The main issue was finding the exact customer quote later.”

The reviewer corrected the product name, added punctuation, and checked the quote against its timestamp.

Outputs

Use one transcript in three different ways.

01

TXT for research

Clean text is easiest to search, quote, and paste into a research repository.

02

SRT for captions

Timed segments become subtitles without manually rebuilding every cue.

03

Structured notes

The reviewed transcript can support a summary, key points, timeline, or meeting record.

Practical questions

Interview transcription FAQ

What to expect after the automatic step finishes.

Does an audio transcript still need editing?

Usually yes. Names, acronyms, overlapping speech, and words masked by noise deserve a human review before publication.

Should I export TXT or SRT?

Use TXT for reading and reuse. Choose SRT or VTT when the words need to stay synchronized with audio or video.

Does converting M4A to MP3 improve accuracy?

No. Converting formats does not restore missing audio detail. Uploading the original recording avoids an unnecessary lossy conversion.
